Cocaine probe: Majority used super majority with Speaker’s support to weaken Parliament – Afenyo-Markin

Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the majority's handling of the push for a parliamentary inquiry into recent cocaine seizures. He accused both the majority and Speaker Alban Bagbin of using their numerical advantage and the Speaker's support to hinder parliamentary oversight.

The Minority Leader described the outcome as a blow to democratic processes and parliamentary oversight, stating that the majority had once again used its super majority, with Bagbin's support, to weaken Parliament. Afenyo-Markin questioned whether the ruling adhered to the standards expected of Parliament in exercising its oversight mandate.

The Minority had sought a parliamentary inquiry into the narcotics seizures, arguing that the circumstances necessitated scrutiny. In contrast, the Majority contended that ongoing investigations by law enforcement should precede any separate parliamentary inquiry.
