‘Canada one of the worst countries in the world’ – Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has labeled Canada as one of the worst countries in the world, amid ongoing trade tensions between the two allies. Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump accused Canada of treating the U.S. unfairly, claiming Ottawa imposes tariffs of 400 percent or more on certain American agricultural products.

In his remarks, Trump stated, "They want to have a deal with us. They call us all the time. The problem is, they have treated the United States very unfairly. They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world."

The U.S. leader also accused Canada of exploiting the bilateral relationship, highlighting trade dynamics and U.S. support for Canada in areas such as defense. Trump anticipated that Canada would eventually return to Washington seeking an agreement, predicting that officials would request the removal of tariffs within the next few weeks.

He added, "I think what’s going to happen is, over the next three or four weeks, they’re going to come to us and they’re going to say, ‘We need to get rid of all the tariffs.’ We’re going to win everything," emphasizing that any eventual agreement must be "a fair deal."

These comments come as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strives to strengthen Canada's economic and strategic partnerships, particularly with the European Union, amid deteriorating relations with the U.S. Canada and the European Union are pursuing cooperation in sectors like trade, defense, energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals.

Although Canada does not aim for full EU membership, it seeks to expand its economic and security alliances beyond the United States. The trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada has intensified in recent months, with both nations imposing tariffs on billions of dollars worth of goods.
