Calls for total UK arms export ban to increase pressure on Israel

Labour MPs and activists have urged the Labour party to impose a complete ban on arms exports to Israel, in a bid to intensify pressure on the nation over its treatment of Palestinians. At the party's annual conference, MP Rosena Allin-Khan called for intensified sanctions and the cessation of the UK's arms trade with Israel following its recent decision to sanction illegal settlers. This decision has strained the UK-Israel relationship to a breaking point, according to sources.

Allin-Khan, a doctor who has practiced in the occupied Palestinian territories, emphasized the need to close loopholes that permit military equipment into Israel, specifically targeting the F-35 fighter programme. She also advocated for the immediate implementation of the trade ban on illegal West Bank settlements and for stronger accountability for Israel's actions toward Palestinians.

Labour's shift towards a more confrontational stance with Israel has left diplomatic relations in a precarious position. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband acknowledged the government's "call out" of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and alleged war crimes in Gaza, promising that the party acknowledges those who have demanded a tougher stance.

Allin-Khan praised the government's admission of being wrong, stating that it was a powerful message. However, she called for tangible action, asserting that the new stance must be used to secure vital medical supplies for Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza. With over 174,000 Palestinians injured and 50,000 suffering life-changing injuries, a third of them children, medical assistance is desperately needed.

The Medical Aid for Palestinians, a pro-Palestinian advocacy group, welcomed the new stance but noted that no significant changes have occurred on the ground. Activists have claimed their activism has finally been recognized, but they stressed that this is merely the first step and urged Britain to take further action, such as imposing additional sanctions and suspending Britain's free trade agreement with Israel.
