California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs bill to create safe spaces around synagogues

California Governor Gavin Newsom has approved legislation to establish protected areas around religious institutions, following a violent protest at a Los Angeles synagogue earlier in the year. The bill, AB 2664, sets 100-foot zones surrounding houses of worship, prohibiting individuals from approaching congregants within eight feet without consent to distribute materials or engage in actions that could harass or intimidate.

Violation could lead to fines up to $1,000 and up to six months in prison, with increased penalties for repeated offenses. Newsom, a leading Democrat, expressed his support in a statement, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding houses of worship for all Californians. The bill's passage comes less than a year after a violent protest at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, where pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked access and caused property damage and assault on a security guard.

The legislation has faced criticism from groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who argue that it infringes upon free speech by creating new criminal penalties for peaceful protesters. Despite opposition, the bill passed with overwhelming support, with hundreds of Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, and Hindu organizations backing it.

Governor Newsom signed the bill at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple, alongside religious leaders and community members, sending a strong message that everyone has the right to practice their faith safely and freely.
