Bono East Minister directs MCE to stop hotel project near Konkrompe SHS

A private developer's plan to construct a hotel near New Konkrompe Senior High School has raised serious concerns among school authorities. The Assistant Headmistress, Catherine Antwiwaa, expressed her fears to Bono East Regional Minister Francis Owusu Antwi during a visit to inspect a government-funded dining hall project for the school. She warned that the proximity of the hotel to the school would expose students, particularly the girls, to negative influences and potential exploitation.

The Regional Minister immediately directed the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) to stop the hotel project and charged the MCE to work with traditional authorities to prevent the developer from proceeding. The Minister emphasized that it is inappropriate to place a hotel next to a school, highlighting the need to protect the safety and moral well-being of students.

This case is part of a growing pattern of concerns across Ghana, where schools are being surrounded by bars, hotels, and other commercial establishments. The Konkrompe situation raises questions about zoning regulations and the enforcement of laws aimed at safeguarding educational spaces. The outcome of the Regional Minister's directive will determine whether the hotel project will be halted, serving as a test of authorities' commitment to protecting students from harmful external influences.

For now, the school community awaits the MCE and traditional leaders' response, hoping to protect the over 1,500 students enrolled at New Konkrompe Senior High School.
