Automating Pull Request Workflows with Claude Task Master

Claude Task Master is an autonomous tool that automates pull request workflows until a defined objective is reached. Invoked with the claudetm command-line interface, it performs a series of stages: planning, working, PR lifecycle, and verification. The planning stage analyzes the repository and generates a task list. During the working stage, Claude executes each task, commits changes, and pushes them to a remote branch.

In the PR lifecycle stage, it waits for CI checks, resolves any failures, addresses review comments, and merges the pull request upon approval. Verification runs a final test suite and lint checks to ensure the success criteria are met. This system maintains state persistence by logging progress to a file, allowing it to resume from the last point in case of interruptions.

Installation can be done via uv, pip, or Docker, and authentication with Claude Code is required. Running a task in the project directory initiates the process, which includes creating a plan, opening a pull request, and continuing until the pull request is merged. The CLI records all actions in a task log, which can be inspected using claudetm status.

An example workflow involves a Ruby on Rails project needing a new API endpoint for user registration. Claude generates a migration, adds a controller action, writes model validations, and creates RSpec tests. It pushes changes to a new branch, opens a pull request, and handles a CI failure by automatically adding the missing route.

Once the reviewer approves the pull request, the CLI merges it. The system also offers REST API and webhook integration for external systems to dispatch tasks and receive progress updates. Profiles allow multiple Claude subscriptions to run in parallel, preventing credential clashes and enabling teams to test different API keys or Anthropic compatible endpoints. Claude Task Master is open source under the MIT license and available via PyPI or Docker.
