Australia news live: Home Affairs orders ‘rapid’ stocktake of government cyber-systems after OpenAI hack

Australia's government has ordered a rapid stocktake of its cyber systems after a recent OpenAI hack, as reported by Home Affairs. All government departments and agencies are tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of legacy systems, with critical systems to be reviewed by the end of the year and others by March. Acting Home Affairs Minister Richard Marles emphasized the rapid pace of AI development, stating that outdated systems cannot be allowed to fail before being replaced.

In separate news, three individuals have been charged in connection with the mistaken identity shooting of Sydney student Marco Tapia, who was fatally shot inside his home on September 1. The trio, aged 22, 23, and 16, were arrested in Junee and are charged with murder, two counts of special aggravated break and enter, and possession of an unauthorised prohibited firearm.

Police allege that the perpetrators entered the wrong home and confronted Tapia, leading to his death. Meanwhile, construction begins on the second stage of the Melbourne Airport rail line, which will include a 7.6km stretch from Albion to Keilor East with a 500m rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River. The project will also see the construction of a new station at Keilor East, with the first stage, the "Sunshine superhub" and stations at Tottenham and Albion, expected to be completed by 2030.

Lastly, a 32-year-old man has been charged with murder in New South Wales after the deaths of two men at Gurranang, about 25km north of Grafton. Police found the bodies of a 79-year-old and 59-year-old man at a house on September 13, leading to the arrest of the 32-year-old suspect who was refused bail.
