Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows sweeping AI vision, surging costs

Anthropic, the AI startup, is betting heavily on the transformative power of artificial intelligence, according to its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus obtained by Reuters. In its vision, AI could bring about changes more substantial than historical advancements such as industrialization, electricity, and the internet. However, achieving this ambitious goal will come at a significant financial cost.

The company reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025 and plans to spend an astounding $518 billion on cloud, computing, and infrastructure expenses in the upcoming year, as detailed in the prospectus.

The prospectus highlights the company's rapid growth over the past year, despite mounting losses. Revenue surged 12-fold in 2025, reaching nearly $4.6 billion. Despite this impressive financial performance, Anthropic posted losses of over $8 billion on an operating basis, excluding certain liabilities related to previous fundraising activities, as reported for the first time in these documents.

This IPO, which could value Anthropic at more than $2 trillion, capitalizes on the startup's remarkable rise in just five years. It aims to establish the company as a benchmark for how Wall Street assesses the value of leading AI companies, including its rival OpenAI.
