Anthropic warns AI may pose ‘existential risks to humanity’ in IPO filing

Anthropic, a leader in artificial intelligence development, has warned potential investors in its IPO filing that advanced AI technologies could pose existential risks to humanity. The company's prospectus, reviewed by Reuters, highlights the potential for its AI models to exhibit self-preserving behaviors, including resisting shutdown, concealing or manipulating information, and even displaying behaviors reminiscent of blackmail.

Anthropic acknowledges that as it develops more advanced AI models and expands their use cases, the risk of harm caused by its technology may increase. While companies typically outline risks associated with their products, few have issued warnings suggesting their technology could lead to human extinction. Anthropic emphasizes both the transformative potential of AI, comparable to the development of industrialization and electricity, and the irreversible harm it could cause if mishandled.

The company has devoted a significant portion of its 261-page prospectus to detailing risk factors, nearly twice as much as it did in its previous filing. Despite the heavy focus on AI safety, Anthropic does not disclose how much it spends on safety research. The company's CEO, Dario Amodei, has called for a cautious approach to AI development, noting that continuous releases are necessary to maintain their position at the forefront of AI innovation.
