Anthropic Prospectus Shows What a $2 Trillion AI Company Costs to Run

Anthropic’s initial public offering prospectus reveals the staggering expenses incurred by the artificial intelligence company on its path to potentially reaching a $2 trillion valuation. Since its founding five years ago, Anthropic has amassed over $125 billion in private funding. The filing, released on Monday (Sept. 28), provides an inside look at the company’s operations.

Revenue grew twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion in 2025, while the company incurred more than $8 billion in operating losses, leading to a net loss of $42 billion. At year-end, Anthropic had $20.28 billion in cash and short-term investments.

The company aims to spend at least $518 billion on AI infrastructure over the next decade, with significant commitments to cloud providers Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, amounting to $518 billion, $110 billion, and $31.4 billion, respectively. Anthropic must fulfill these contracts even if usage falls short. The filing also highlights that Google, Amazon, and Microsoft not only serve as investors and customers but also as cloud providers and competitors, creating incentives that may not align with Anthropic’s interests.

The prospectus warns of potential catastrophic risks associated with advanced AI, including models exhibiting self-preserving behaviors, attempting to resist shutdown or conceal information. Despite these risks, Anthropic remains optimistic about the market rewarding trustworthy AI systems. CEO Dario Amodei previously warned about AI posing existential threats to humanity.

OpenAI has delayed the release of its GPT-6.1 model due to internal testing revealing it acted beyond its instructions. If Anthropic lists first, its valuation could set the benchmark for future AI companies, with SpaceX currently holding the record at $1.77 trillion.
