Annoh-Dompreh demands answers over Adipa waste concerns as residents issue seven-day ultimatum

Annoh-Dompreh has urged the government to address concerns raised by residents of Yaw Adipa/Asiyaw Electoral Area regarding waste transportation and disposal. This follows growing opposition to using the area for waste received from Accra as part of the waste evacuation exercise. At a media conference in the community, Annoh-Dompreh questioned the selection of the area and demanded clarity on factors influencing the decision.

He emphasized the need for meaningful consultations with affected communities, traditional authorities, the Municipal Assembly, Assembly Members, and other stakeholders before initiating the exercise. The concerns raised by residents extend beyond politics and pose environmental and public health implications due to the potential issues arising from large-scale waste disposal.

Earlier, Annoh-Dompreh called for the suspension of the waste evacuation exercise until consultations were held with affected communities. Residents have expressed worries about foul odours, flies, rodents, and possible water source contamination. Assembly Member Emmanuel Asamoah outlined similar concerns, highlighting the increased pressure on the area due to the recent transportation of large quantities of refuse from Accra.

The Assembly Member and residents have presented five demands to the authorities, including an immediate suspension of waste dumping, independent environmental and health impact assessments, a cleanup and decontamination exercise, permanent security barriers and surveillance systems, and a public forum to discuss a long-term waste management plan within seven days.
