Accurate aviation reporting vital to public confidence

Malaysian Press Institute president Datuk Yong Soo Heong emphasized the vital role of aviation journalism in maintaining public confidence and shaping Malaysia's international reputation. Speaking at the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM)-MPI Media Literacy Programme, Yong stressed the importance of accuracy, context, and responsibility in aviation reporting, particularly concerning safety issues, incidents, and regulatory decisions.

He highlighted that aviation journalism is not a niche field but a crucial bridge connecting regulators, the industry, and the public. Yong stated that the stories journalists tell about aviation significantly impact perceptions, influence policies, and reassure consumers both locally and internationally. He urged journalists to focus on providing clarity and context rather than chasing headlines, as aviation news can reach international audiences within minutes.

Yong noted that a single misinformation report filed in Kuala Lumpur could be read in major cities like London, Sydney, or Tokyo within minutes, underscoring the importance of upholding high standards in Malaysian journalism. He pointed out that aviation represents a significant sector of Malaysia's economy, citing the recent return of Formula 1 to the Sepang International Circuit, which involves air transportation of racing drivers, cars, and support personnel.

Yong praised CAAM for evolving into a modern, professional regulator, reflecting Malaysia's commitment to safety, efficiency, and international best practices. He also mentioned that the Malaysian Institute of Journalism (MPI) would continue to support training and closer collaboration between journalists and aviation institutions to enhance the quality of aviation reporting in Malaysia.
