2027: Akpabio warns candidates against violence, intimidation

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, cautioned political candidates and parties against engaging in violence, intimidation, and divisive campaigns during the upcoming 2027 general elections. In a message delivered during the Senate's resumption of plenary sessions, Akpabio urged political actors to maintain restraint and allow Nigerian citizens to make informed decisions when choosing their leaders.

He emphasized the importance of candidates presenting their policies and visions without causing community divisions or exploiting religious, regional, and other differences.

Akpabio stressed that "no electoral prize is worth a Nigerian life" and that victory should not be celebrated if it leaves the nation wounded. He reminded candidates that vigorous debate is essential, but the country must remain united after the elections. "Those who seek office need not see eye to eye to walk hand in hand as Nigerians. We can contend without setting community against community, faith against faith or one part of our republic against another," he said.

The Senate President also called upon lawmakers to maintain decorum and fulfill their legislative responsibilities despite the political activities surrounding the elections. He urged lawmakers to set an example by conducting themselves with dignity and remaining focused on their mandate.

Akpabio reiterated that while the Senate consists of members from various parties, regions, and convictions, they have been entrusted with representing one republic. He stated, "The people sent us here to serve until the end of our mandate. There is work before us, and we shall remain at our posts despite the campaigns." He asked politicians to approach the election season with restraint and responsibility, urging them to campaign with honor, debate with conviction, and serve with humility.

"We have returned to this Chamber because Nigeria's work continues. By God's grace, we shall keep faith with her, and with the people who sent us here," Akpabio concluded.
