16 charged in cocaine trafficking investigation in Quebec

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Quebec have charged 16 individuals in connection with a cocaine trafficking investigation, known as "Project Chrome." The investigation, launched in 2022, involved officers from the RCMP's Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and Money Laundering Investigative Team, as well as the Canada Revenue Agency.

Six buildings linked to an alleged criminal organization were identified and are now subject to restraint orders. The total value of property seized amounts to more than $9 million, including 14 kilograms of cocaine and over $145,000 in cash. Among the 16 charged are 11 from Montreal, aged between 24 and 73, and four from Sainte-Julienne, Blainville, Gatineau, and Gatineau.

Notably, two individuals, Franco Lopez and Pasquale Lopez, are believed to be members of the Lopez-Oliverio family. One suspect remains at large and is believed to be abroad. The suspects face charges including drug trafficking, possession of cocaine for trafficking, laundering proceeds of crime, and conspiracy. They are also accused of offenses related to a criminal organization and violations of the Income Tax Act. Court appearances are scheduled for Tuesday, with 15 expected to appear.
