Young Chinese acrobat turns 12 years of training into daring 10m-high act

On September 29, a young Chinese acrobat named Sha Ma Laqian showcased his daring 10m-high act during the Legend of Chinese Charm show at the Beijing Chaoyang Theatre. Laqian, a 19-year-old member of the Sichuan Suining Acrobatics Troupe, belongs to the Yi ethnic minority group. The performance, which included nine acts, was part of a one-hour show that captivated the audience, including participants of the Asean Media Workshop in China.

Laqian began his training at the age of seven, dedicating 12 years of intense practice to perfecting his skills. Initially, he experienced nervousness when performing the high-chair act, but through continuous training, he overcame this fear. Laqian stated that mastering the art has its challenges, as injuries are common in the field of acrobatics. However, the audience's support and applause make the effort worthwhile.

During the performance, Laqian reached heights of up to 10 meters, while his personal highest record stands at 14 meters. He expressed his aspiration to introduce and showcase Chinese acrobatics to the international community, allowing more people worldwide to appreciate the unique and beautiful art.

The show featured over 60 performers, with each act drawing thunderous applause. Apart from the high-chair act, other acts included plate spinning, bowl balancing, hat juggling, ground ring acrobatics, bicycle acrobatics, and a flying motorcycle show. The performance highlighted the blend of traditional Chinese acrobatics with modern stage technology, offering the Asean Media Workshop participants a glimpse into the evolution of this art form.
