WhatsApp to Make Major Interface Change on Android

WhatsApp is currently working on a significant redesign of its Android app, with recent changes centered around the bottom navigation bar. The redesign, which is still in development and not yet accessible to regular beta testers, can be spotted in the Android beta version 2.26.38.10. A new, more rounded and floating navigation bar is being tested, set apart from the main interface rather than remaining attached to the bottom edge.

The visual design of the new bar differs from Apple's Liquid Glass style, with a less transparent appearance to better align with WhatsApp's own design language. The redesign is being tested in both light and dark themes, with the changes being more noticeable in the light theme currently. Additionally, there are indications that Meta AI may receive its own dedicated spot within the bottom navigation bar, potentially becoming a central hub for AI-powered features.

WhatsApp has already experimented with a dedicated Meta AI tab in previous Android beta versions. The company has also tested various navigation layouts in recent months, including a new Contacts tab and adjustments to the placement of Communities, Updates and Meta AI. Due to these ongoing changes, the current layout should not be considered final.

Early screenshots of the latest build even show Meta AI appearing in multiple locations, suggesting that WhatsApp is still determining the final placement of this feature. As of now, WhatsApp has not announced a public release date for the redesigned interface, indicating that further changes are likely before the update becomes available to users.
