WATCH: Chatsworth’s Bangladesh Market set for proposed R2m refurbishment

The Bangladesh Market in Chatsworth, South Africa, is set to undergo a significant R2 million refurbishment project. The plans, released by the eThekwini Municipality, aim to extend the food court, improve shelters, and introduce new stalls. Councillor Tony Govender announced that the project is scheduled for implementation in the current financial year, from July 2026 to June 2027, using funds allocated for the capital expense budget.

However, the previous financial year's allocation of R2 million only resulted in the completion of lighting improvements, leaving other aspects unfinished due to various issues within the municipality. The upcoming project, as presented by the architectural division, promises a comprehensive overhaul of the market, including the installation of a standardized stall layout, a new sheltered roof for the open space, and the implementation of new ablution facilities.

Additionally, the food court will be expanded by three meters, and vents will be installed to ensure comfort for traders and customers during the summer months. Shelters will be erected over the poultry area and the entrance, providing shade and protection for traders facing inclement weather. The stalls themselves will be refurbished to a uniform standard, with overnight storage areas included.

To enhance accessibility, particularly for elderly traders, the toilets will be renovated, and an extra ablution facility will be constructed to minimize the distance they need to travel.

Govender is optimistic about the market's future, envisioning it as a tourist attraction and a preferred shopping destination for local residents. By revitalizing the area, the project aims to contribute positively to the local economy in Chatsworth.
