US, Iran set to hold separate talks with mediators on Monday or Tuesday, official says

Qatari mediators are set to conduct individual negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in New York and with the US representatives on Monday or Tuesday, according to an official briefed on the peace talks. The focus of these discussions will be a revised seven-day proposal Iran submitted last week at the United Nations General Assembly.

Araqchi is currently in New York after participating in the General Assembly. While it is not yet clear who will represent the US in the talks with mediators, Iran's ISNA news agency confirmed that Araqchi would meet the mediators on Monday morning in New York. Both sides will review the latest proposals and perspectives regarding the ongoing conflict, as per ISNA.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated later on Monday that Araqchi's stay in New York was not extended and that the minister would return to Tehran as per his initial schedule. However, Baghaei did not comment on the mediator talks. Iran's seven-day plan aims to cease all hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, unfreeze billions of dollars' worth of Iranian assets, lift sanctions on Iranian oil, and remove the US blockade on Iranian ports.

Upon reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iran would also restart dialogue on its nuclear program. US President Donald Trump had previously rejected Iran's proposal, citing the country's swift agreement due to its severe economic pressure. Nonetheless, Trump indicated on Sunday that US negotiators would continue engaging in further talks during the week.

Araqchi emphasized on Sunday that mediators had not formally communicated a US rejection to Tehran and that Iran would await Washington's final stance before determining its subsequent actions. He reiterated that any progress towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz is contingent upon meeting these conditions, asserting that a negotiated resolution is the only way to resolve the impasse.
