UK police say RAF Fairford suspects now released on bail

Five British men from London, aged between 23 and 25, were arrested on Sunday after three suspicious white vans were spotted near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Initially detained on suspicion of explosives offences, they were later arrested on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism. After extensive questioning, they were released on police bail on Monday.

RAF Fairford, a British-owned airbase used by the US Air Force, is located about 100 miles west of London and is significant due to its role in supporting American military operations during conflicts such as the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 Iraq War. It has become even more important in the context of the current Iran conflict, with Britain authorizing the use of the base for specific defensive operations against Iranian missiles and launch sites.

The arrests came after police were alerted to the vans near RAF Fairford, which led to the evacuation of around 85 households. Bomb-disposal specialists and robots were deployed to examine the vehicles. However, authorities have not publicly detailed what explosives, if any, were found or whether they were capable of causing a major explosion.

Counter-terrorism investigators are examining possible links to Iran, Russia, or non-state militant groups, but Iran has categorically denied any involvement. US President Donald Trump suggested that authorities had known about the suspects before their arrest, but the investigation remains active, and the motive has not yet been established.
