UK police arrest five men on suspicion of terror offenses near air base used by US forces

British police made five arrests on Sunday following a terror-related incident near RAF Fairford, a military base utilized by the United States Air Force in western England. The operation led to a significant security response and the temporary evacuation of nearby residents. The police deployed a 440-yard security cordon around the site and relocated eighty-five households to a nearby recreation center while bomb disposal experts examined the suspicious vehicles.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone stated that the investigation into the full nature of the incident was ongoing. The suspects were initially detained under the Explosives Act before their charges were upgraded to include the preparation of a terrorist act. Under UK counter-terrorism legislation, suspects can be held for up to 14 days before formal charges are brought.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans affirmed that counter-terrorism units are working closely with regional partners as the investigation is in its early stages. Local residents have expressed concerns over the security implications, with some reporting prior warnings about suspicious vehicles in the area.
