UK counter-terror police question five men held at airbase used by US to attack Iran

British counter-terrorism police questioned five men on Monday, suspected of explosives and terrorism offenses, after their detention near the United States' military airbase at RAF Fairford in west England. The men were seized early Sunday morning following a tip-off about three large white vans heading to the airfield. US President Donald Trump had stated the suspects had been under investigation by British and US authorities and posed a significant threat.

British authorities have not disclosed the suspects' identities but believe an Iranian-linked motive is most likely, with Russian sabotage or an Islamist plot also being considered. A local farmer reported seeing hooded and masked men running into the fields, believing their call to police may have thwarted the suspects' plans. Defence minister Wes Streeting, while acknowledging the farmer's partial view, declined to speculate on the suspects' motives.

The farmer's actions have led to a 400-meter cordon around the base, with residents from 85 homes evacuated. Police have also stepped up security at the base and other US facilities in Britain, while the US Embassy issued a security alert warning US citizens to exercise caution and be mindful of personal security. Iran has denied any involvement in the attacks or plots.
