Tuesday weather: Severe thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds to batter parts of SA

Severe thunderstorms, hail and strong winds are set to strike parts of South Africa on Tuesday, according to the South African Weather Service. Gauteng, North West and portions of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and Northern Cape are under a Yellow Level 2 warning for the storms.

In Gauteng, residents can anticipate a shift to cold, cloudy weather with a 60% likelihood of rain and thunderstorms. North West will see cloudy skies, gusty winds and scattered showers, with a 60% chance of precipitation. Mpumalanga will be overcast and chilly, with isolated showers and thunderstorms, also at a 60% chance.

Limpopo will experience a mix of cloudy and cool conditions, with scattered showers becoming more scattered towards the south-west and south-central areas, at a 30-60% chance. The Free State will be cold and cloudy in the east, while isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more scattered in the north, with a 30-60% chance of rain.

The Northern Cape will have a mix of partly cloudy skies and isolated showers in the east, where rain is possible at a 30% chance. In contrast, the Western Cape will remain largely dry with no rain forecast. Along the coast, strong winds, both fresh to strong north-easterly winds along the south coast in the morning and south-easterly winds along the south-west coast, are possible.

Rainfall is expected to be mainly along the eastern coast of the Eastern Cape, with a 30% chance of rain. KwaZulu-Natal will see morning and evening fog over the interior, with otherwise cloudy and cool to cold conditions. Isolated showers and rain are forecast, with a 30-60% chance of rain in affected areas.
