He claims that the US already has safeguards in place for AI, including within the Department of Justice.

Johnson highlighted the necessity of transparency and oversight before addressing any potential safety concerns, suggesting that the Department of Justice may intervene if issues arise. However, he emphasized that the initial step is ensuring transparency and instituting oversight. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have expressed skepticism about Trump's hands-off approach, as the technology poses concerns regarding safety, job losses, and the concentration of power among a few tech giants.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries acknowledged that industry leaders are advocating for government intervention and stressed Congress's responsibility to protect American citizens. When it comes to AI safety, Jeffries advocated for a bold and responsible approach, emphasizing the need for action now. On Sunday, Trump had dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and AI companies like OpenAI, Google's DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI have all called for slowing AI development.
