Trump expects new Iran talks despite rejecting deal offer

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that he anticipates resuming talks with Iran, despite rejecting a truce proposal presented by Iran during the UN General Assembly in New York. Tehran's plan involves a seven-day ceasefire followed by the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping channel. However, Trump dismissed the plan and questioned his confidence in a new deal, stating that it would resemble agreements potentially reached a year ago.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, reiterated Iran's demands, emphasizing that any resumption of Strait of Hormuz shipping would depend on Iran fulfilling its seven conditions. These conditions include a complete cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil and assets, and an end to the U.S. naval blockade.

Despite Iran's demands, Washington's UN ambassador, Mike Waltz, criticized Tehran for offering an unacceptable deal, claiming that it was merely an attempt to pressure the U.S. into participation in talks. Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed to have seized an American submersible drone in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging it was used for espionage.

Iran and the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding in June to end the conflict, reopen the strait, and discuss Iran's nuclear program, but disagreements led to the deal's collapse soon after.
