Three-Day Nationwide Bank Strike From September 28-30 Deferred After IBA-UFBU Talks

India's nationwide bank strike planned for September 28 to 30 has been postponed after a late-night meeting between the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) on Sunday. The strike was expected to coincide with the half-yearly closure of bank accounts, potentially causing significant disruption.

Bank branches are now set to operate as usual from Monday, September 28, avoiding the anticipated closure. The UFBU and IBA have established a joint committee to further discuss the demand for a five-day banking week, which would close banks on all Saturdays. While no final decision has been made on this proposal, the committee will consider the issue, taking stakeholder input into account.

In addition, the committee will examine the performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for senior bank officers to ensure it aligns with earlier agreements. For customers, the immediate effect is that they can expect bank branches to operate normally from Monday. The planned Sunday opening on September 27 has helped minimize the risk of disruption, allowing customers to complete essential transactions before the strike.

No new strike date has been announced, and while the five-day banking proposal remains under discussion, the agreement between the UFBU and IBA defers the agitation for now.
