Thieves Target NVIDIA Trailers Expecting AI Chips, Find 20 Tons Of Sand Instead

In a peculiar twist of fate, thieves in California targeted two trailers adorned with NVIDIA and PlusAI logos, anticipating the presence of high-value AI chips inside. However, their heist resulted in a rather mundane discovery - 20,000 pounds of sand, amounting to 20 tons of the coarse and irritating substance. The trailers in question belong to PlusAI, a startup specializing in autonomous driving technology, which is currently collaborating with NVIDIA on AI software development.

These particular trailers were being utilized for real-world tests to analyze how fully loaded vehicles would perform under various road conditions. While the trailers themselves may lack valuable contents, the truck cabs were likely equipped with advanced AI hardware, although they were parked inside the company's warehouse at the time of the theft.

The absence of valuable cargo may have been a contributing factor to the thieves' decision, as they abandoned the vehicles outside the company's warehouse, where they were secured with hand locks that had been broken. The theft came to light when a senior executive at PlusAI received an unexpected congratulatory message from an acquaintance, who noticed the company's "trucks" near their own workplace in Newark.

This led to the swift alerting of law enforcement, resulting in the recovery of the vehicles. As of now, the case remains under investigation with no arrests made, leaving the perpetrators at large.
