Tension in Colombia Over Presidential Veto of Business Leader Bruce Mac Master

Tension is brewing in Colombia after President Abelardo de la Espriella vetoed leading business figure Bruce Mac Master, president of the National Association of Colombian Entrepreneurs (Andi). The relationship between the two entered a period of open conflict when the government barred Mac Master from having contact with its officials. This decision has caused a crisis within Andi, with companies beginning to withdraw from some of its bodies and its board of directors facing a difficult decision.

The conflict stems from disagreements between Mac Master and the government over economic and business policy decisions. Mac Master defended the association's autonomy, rejecting actions that he claimed damage its reputation and called for an end to what he described as a campaign against him. While the government has not released an official document confirming the veto, the tension became public when journalist Vicky Davila reported on it.

The situation is significant because Mac Master had publicly supported de la Espriella during the presidential campaign. Since becoming president, the differences between the two have become more visible, particularly over economic and social issues. One area of disagreement involves the money the state pays health insurance providers based on the number of members they have.

Companies like Coca-Cola Bebidas de Colombia and Industria Nacional de Gaseosas, as well as Incauca, Ingenio Providencia, and Sucroal, have withdrawn from Andi's bodies amid the controversy. While the companies stated they are not leaving the association, the move has raised concerns within Andi about the possibility of other companies following suit.

To address the situation, the board of directors will analyze the situation on October 14, after an attempt to call an extraordinary meeting failed. Mac Master's statement seeks to distinguish between his personal situation and the future of the organization, emphasizing the importance of preserving Andi's autonomy and independence.
