Supreme Court refuses to stay MDR on UPI payments, but questions Centre over move: 'What is it?'

SEOUL, Sept. 28 (Yonhap) -- Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae expressed his intention to clarify his stance regarding his refusal to recommend a new justice candidate during the upcoming parliamentary audit on Monday. The dispute between Cho and the presidential office arose after the latter requested Cho to recommend a new justice candidate for President Lee Jae Myung's consideration.

Cho declined the request, citing the absence of specific reasons or constitutional grounds to comply. When questioned about the matter on Monday, Cho asserted that he would articulate his position through the parliamentary audit of the court, set to commence on October 6.

Subsequently, the parliamentary legislation and judiciary committee adopted a motion to summon Cho as a witness during the forthcoming parliamentary audit. Notably, the main opposition People Power Party abstained from the vote, arguing that the decision infringes upon the judiciary's independence. Typically, the Supreme Court chief justice concludes the court's parliamentary audit with opening remarks; however, Cho's refusal last week drew swift condemnation from Cheong Wa Dae, alleging that Cho harbors a view that contravenes the Constitution.

According to the Constitution, Supreme Court justices are appointed by the president upon the recommendation of the chief justice and with the consent of the National Assembly.
