Supreme Court cancels Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre’s bail

The Supreme Court on Monday, September 28, 2026, stayed an order granting bail to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who is accused of assaulting doctors at a municipal hospital in Thane district. The court instructed Mhatre to surrender within three days. Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta emphasized that the medical profession should not be attacked in any way.

The bench also mentioned a similar incident involving the same party after Mhatre's case. Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, representing Mhatre, stated that two witnesses had been examined and that the complainant, a woman doctor, would be called to testify on October 3. The trial had already commenced, and there were no obstacles, according to Dave.

The court noted that Mhatre was involved in 19 criminal cases, including this one, and all were politically motivated, with him being acquitted in 18. The Bombay High Court had granted bail to Mhatre on August 7, along with four other accused, and ordered a speedy trial. The incident led to widespread outrage in July when Mhatre and others assaulted doctors at Shastri Nagar Hospital after an argument over delayed treatment for a pregnant woman.
