Supreme Court Cancels Bail Granted To Shiv Sena’s Ramesh Mhatre In Dombivli Hospital Assault Case, Orders Surrender

Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre faces harsher penalties after the Supreme Court revoked his bail granted by the Bombay High Court in a Dombivli hospital assault case. The court mandated Mhatre's surrender to authorities within three days, signaling his return to judicial custody. The bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta emphasized the necessity to safeguard medical professionals, stating the medical fraternity should not be targeted.

The hearing centered on the assault at Shastri Nagar Hospital on July 6, sparked by a disagreement over treatment for a pregnant woman. Mhatre was initially released on bail by a Kalyan court on July 14 but faced cancellation of bail by the Bombay High Court on August 7, after which he was granted bail with stringent conditions, including remaining outside Maharashtra until the filing of the chargesheet.

The Maharashtra government subsequently sought the Supreme Court's intervention to revoke the bail. The police have submitted a chargesheet exceeding 1,800 pages, involving allegations of assault, obstruction of public servants, unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation, outraging a woman's modesty, and violations of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act and Police Act.

The fifth accused, Sadhana Sanjay Karande, was denied bail by the Kalyan court and is currently in judicial custody, backed by CCTV footage and witness statements.
