Debrecen witnessed Ireland secure a comfortable 3-0 victory over Israel in a Nations League match on Sunday, putting an end to a contentious weekend for the team. The match came after goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu's withdrawal from the squad due to a dispute over playing the fixture amid calls for a boycott. Following a majority vote from players, the match proceeded with defender Jimmy Dunne stepping in as Ireland's emergency third goalkeeper.

The FAI faced criticism from fans and politicians for not providing players with adequate direction. The subdued atmosphere at the game reflected the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, with only a few hundred Israeli supporters and a small number of Irish fans in attendance. The Irish players honored the conflict by wearing black armbands and observing a moment of silence during the Israeli national anthem.

With no pre-match handshake or exchange of pennants, striker Troy Parrott opened the scoring in the 14th minute, followed by Adam Idah and Jack Moylan scoring in the 25th minute. Moylan removed his black armband after scoring before receiving boos from supporters. Despite the win, Ireland's position in the group remains precarious, trailing leaders Austria by three points.

The defeat of their opening game against Kosovo left them in third place, but the match against Israel may prove contentious again when they face the team again on October 4 in Serbia, where the debate over playing Israel is expected to resurface.
