SpaceX's Starship megarocket makes orbital debut deploying Starlinks before early ending

SpaceX's Starship rocket successfully reached orbit for the first time on Monday, despite an unexpected engine shutdown mid-flight. The uncrewed 40-story vehicle, consisting of a Super Heavy booster and the main Starship vessel, launched from SpaceX's Starbase complex near Brownsville. Originally scheduled for a 10-hour mission, the mission was cut short to three hours due to the engine issue.

The Super Heavy booster safely returned to the Gulf of Mexico, while Starship initially faced a problem with one of its three main engines shutting down. However, engineers successfully resolved the issue, allowing Starship to deploy 26 new Starlink satellites at an altitude of approximately 269 km. This marks the 14th flight of Starship since 2023, with the aim of making routine launches starting later in the year.

The successful deployment of Starlink satellites, the first orbital payload for Starship, is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for SpaceX's Starlink unit. This mission, though shortened, was a significant step forward for Starship, a fully reusable spacecraft designed to carry out future NASA missions to the moon and play a crucial role in Elon Musk's vision of frequent space launches.
