SpaceX Launches Massive Starship Into Orbit For 1st Time, Flight Ends Early

SpaceX successfully launched its impressive Starship into orbit on Monday for the first time, delivering advanced Starlink satellites as intended. However, the mission ended prematurely after three hours when the spacecraft re-entered the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific and landed north of Hawaii. Initially, SpaceX aimed for a ten-hour flight, covering six orbits around Earth to demonstrate readiness for NASA's Artemis moon program.

During liftoff, one engine shut down prematurely, but Starship still made it to orbit. Chants of "Starship is orbital" erupted from Mission Control once confirmation arrived. SpaceX founder Elon Musk expressed pride in reaching orbit and praised the safe and inspiring execution of the mission. The Starship carried 26 of Musk's latest Starlink satellites, joining 11,000 older models already providing internet service.

Upon splashdown, the spacecraft tipped over and exploded in flames, marking a dramatic conclusion to the mission. While the first-stage booster was designed for a return to the launch site, SpaceX opted to end the flight early for safety reasons. Musk emphasized the importance of ensuring the spacecraft's integrity before attempting landings.

The next Starship could potentially return to the launch pad using mechanical arms for retrieval, with an expected return to Starbase by year's end or early next year. SpaceX is pushing for certification of Starship for orbital flight, a crucial step towards lunar and Mars exploration, with NASA's Artemis missions as the primary target.
