Smush Announce New Album i’ll always wish,,: Hear “milkweed butterfly”

Brooklyn-based Vancouver collective Smush unveiled their sophomore album titled i’ll always wish, in February. Their cover EP Standards, which included interpretations of Big Rig, Hotline TNT, and Field Medic, infused modern classics with kinetic glitchy and shoegazey energy. Now, they have returned with a fresh single, milkweed butterfly, announcing the upcoming album. This track marks the beginning of a sophomore album that promises a thrilling musical experience.

The band comprises Emily Borrowman on bass and vocals, Atley King on guitars, Rudi Neubrander on drums, and Wilson Woods on keys. Together, they blend grungy guitars, explosive drums, and a skittering drum-and-bass beat to create a unique sonic landscape. The single milkweed butterfly was inspired by the perspective of a child experiencing anxiety and depression, who struggled to understand or contextualize their feelings.

By creating this song, Emily aimed to make sense of the instability of immigrating to the United States.

The single is accompanied by a captivating music video, directed by Henry Nelson. The video features people fencing while the band plays in a small store, adding an additional layer of visual interest to the track.
