Siaya Saccos receive Ksh9.98M to boost farmers’ access to financing

Eight Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (Saccos) operating in Siaya County have received Ksh9.9 million under an agricultural support programme to enhance farmers' access to financing. The funds were disbursed on September 28, 2026, by the County Government of Siaya, led by Governor James Orengo, in collaboration with the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).

The initiative aims to assist farmers across all 30 wards in Siaya’s six sub-counties by improving their creditworthiness and access to financial resources for agricultural activities through participating Saccos. The eight Saccos have undergone training in financial management and received upgrades to their administrative systems, including the provision of computers and printers and the recruitment of bookkeepers to manage financial records effectively.

County Director of Cooperatives Samuel Wambisa emphasized the importance of safeguarding the credentials required to access the new automated system to prevent unauthorized access. Siaya Agriculture CEC Willis Osoyo outlined plans to establish a County Sacco Union to unify the 30 participating cooperatives and Saccos, ensuring their sustainability and advocacy for improved access to external funding.

The union would also work towards establishing agricultural aggregation centers to facilitate the collective sale of produce, thereby enhancing farmers' earnings, access to education, healthcare, and overall livelihoods. The success of this programme hinges on how efficiently the eight Saccos manage the allocated funds and their ability to provide farmers with the necessary financial support for their agricultural endeavors.
