Sheikh Mohammed outlines three principles for future government leaders

Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has outlined three principles he believes will define future leadership in a rapidly changing world. In his letter, "A Message to My Work Team," he urged government teams to embrace adaptability, empower people and make decisions faster.

The first principle is adaptability over long-term plans. Sheikh Mohammed believes future leaders do not build long-term plans or develop extensive strategies. Instead, they build adaptable institutions, teams capable of learning and systems that can quickly adapt to new circumstances. He stresses that the future cannot be predicted, but it can be prepared for, with an institution's strength lying in its ability to adapt rather than its accumulated experience and knowledge.

The second principle centers on people as the greatest resource. Sheikh Mohammed asserts that teams are the most important resource within an organization, emphasizing that people are the foundation of creativity and the source of ideas. He contrasts traditional leadership, which monitors employees and fears their mistakes, with the future leader who liberates and encourages initiative, building trust and unleashing employees' potential.

The third principle focuses on the speed of decision-making. Sheikh Mohammed argues that as the pace of change accelerates, institutions must respond faster or risk falling behind. He highlights the role of artificial intelligence in compressing time and accelerating decision-making processes. According to Sheikh Mohammed, acting before certainty is complete is better than waiting for an ideal decision.
