Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic Announces Resignation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation on Sunday to run for prime minister in the upcoming October snap elections. Speaking from the presidential palace in Belgrade, Vucic addressed his supporters, stating that he would hand over his duties to the parliament speaker the following morning. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve Serbia honorably and honestly throughout his presidential term, despite the challenges faced during his rule. Vucic emphasized that the fight for Serbia was only beginning.

The Serbian Constitution prohibits Vucic from seeking a third term, as he is serving his second term as president and would have left office in May 2027. Vucic, who is known for his ties to Serbian nationalism and his time as a minister under Slobodan Milosevic's administration, has been a dominant figure in Serbian politics for over a decade.

Supporters of Vucic praised him for his stability, commitment to development projects, and patriotism in a country that had been overshadowed by war in the 1990s and subsequent international isolation.

However, opponents criticized Vucic for his increasing authoritarian tendencies and the government's alleged endemic corruption. Abroad, Vucic had to navigate the competing interests of Serbia's aspirations to join the European Union while maintaining close ties to Russia. Earlier in September, Vucic had called for snap elections, citing major turbulence on the domestic political scene following a tragedy in Novi Sad, the country's second-largest city.

The collapse of a railway station awning in November 2024 killed 16 people, leading to nationwide protests by students and the opposition demanding accountability, transparency, an end to systemic corruption, and early parliamentary elections. Despite the government's repeated denials, several officials, including two ministers, were arrested or resigned following the incident. The snap election will be a crucial test of Vucic's popularity and political survival.
