Santacruz Sewer Tragedy: Worker Dies, Another Hospitalised After Entering Manhole During Drain Cleaning At Society

In a tragic incident at a residential society in Santacruz East, a 50-year-old man lost his life, and a 30-year-old worker was hospitalized after entering a municipal sewer manhole during drainage-cleaning work. The unfortunate event occurred around 11 am on Monday at Bhavya Niketan Society on Golibar Road No. 8. According to the BMC disaster management cell report, the incident was reported at 10.56 pm.

The society had hired an unknown private contractor to clear the internal sewer line of the building, which was not a BMC employee. Both workers entered the manhole without informing the BMC staff, leading to their untimely demise. The Mumbai Fire department managed to rescue the labourers, and they were admitted to V N Desai Hospital, where both were subsequently treated.

The 50-year-old Santosh Kashate was declared dead upon arrival, while the 30-year-old Ajay Thakur, who was found unconscious, is currently undergoing treatment. The police have initiated an FIR against the contractor for allegedly causing death by negligence and are also investigating the society members for assigning the work to private workers without informing the BMC.
