S. Korean fencers finish Asian Games with 4 golds, eye 2028 Olympics

South Korea's fencing team concluded its Asian Games journey with four gold medals, representing a stark decline from their previous record of 16 years ago. This result, coupled with four silvers and two bronzes, marks the team's second-place finish in the fencing medal standings, trailing behind host nation Japan. Japan emerged victorious with six golds, two silvers, and three bronzes.

This marks the first time since 2010 that South Korea has not topped the fencing table at the Asian Games; they had previously led the standings in 2014, 2018, and 2023, claiming eight gold medals in 2014 alone.

Japan's fencing prowess has been a notable force on the global stage since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Five medals, including two golds, were secured by Japanese fencers at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with many of those athletes also participating in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. For South Korea, fencing presented both triumphs and hurdles in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
