Russia strikes Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences, killing at least one person

Russian strikes on Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences on Monday resulted in at least one death and six injuries, according to officials. The attack destroyed the academy's headquarters, causing a fire and leaving people trapped inside. The destruction of educational and scientific infrastructure is aimed at intimidating civilians and disrupting normal operations, said Ukraine's Minister of Education and Science, Andrii Butenko.

The assault was part of a series of deadly strikes across Ukraine, which Moscow launched on Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens, as reported by officials. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that the attacks in the capital had left 19 people injured, including three children.

In addition to the attacks on the National Academy of Sciences, Russian forces struck other targets in Ukraine. Three people, including an Azerbaijani national, were killed in strikes on Kyiv Oblast overnight, while eight others sustained injuries. A drone attack on Dnipro in eastern Ukraine resulted in three fatalities and 12 injuries, causing a fire at an administrative building.

Ukrainian forces retaliated by targeting two defense plants in Russia's Tula and Voronezh regions and oil facilities in Krasnodar. Sanctions were also imposed on facilities used by Russia for drone attacks against Ukraine in the Kaluga and Oryol regions. Ukrainian officials are preparing for a potential winter offensive by Russian forces targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
