Rs 1.77 crore Barabar Mela bid, no amenities: Patna High Court seeks revenue details

The Patna High Court has questioned the Jehanabad administration regarding the revenue and spending details related to the Barabar Shravani Mela, a month-long fair that generated a bid of Rs 1.77 crore. The court sought information about the revenue generated over the past five years and the amount spent on developing the historic site.

The court also expressed concern over the lack of permanent facilities for pilgrims and tourists at the Barabar Caves, which date back to the 3rd century BCE during the Mauryan period. The court noted that the caves were initially commissioned by Emperor Ashoka and his grandson Dasharatha and donated as monastic sanctuaries to Ajivika sect ascetics.

The court pointed out several areas requiring attention, including designated stalls, paved pathways, proper electrical infrastructure, waste disposal facilities, clean drinking water, public toilets, adequate security, CCTV surveillance, and emergency medical facilities. The court specifically asked the district administration to provide a blueprint for permanent infrastructure and disclose the revenue generated from the fair over the past five years and the investment made for the area's upliftment.

The court also directed the Superintendent of Police, Jehanabad, to explain safety measures to prevent a recurrence of the 2024 stampede.
