Resident doctors give Tinubu two-week ultimatum, threaten strike

Government hospitals nationwide face potential disruption if resident doctors and the federal government fail to reach an agreement within two weeks, according to the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). At its 46th Annual General Meeting in Calabar, the NARD announced a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve outstanding welfare and professional issues affecting its members, warning that inaction could lead to industrial action.

Dr Emmanuel Ogar, NARD's National President, presented the resolutions, detailing concerns over the slow implementation of past agreements, including those related to remuneration, career progression, professional allowances, excessive workload, and the overall welfare of resident doctors. The association demanded immediate action on these issues, standardised compensation templates for excess workload, and reliable data for justifying payments for additional duties.

NARD also expressed worry over the ongoing emigration of Nigerian doctors and health professionals, which has exacerbated manpower shortages and increased workload for those remaining in the country. The group urged the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to address factors contributing to this exodus and called on state governments to prioritize the welfare of doctors and other health workers, ensuring the implementation of relevant welfare policies.

The NARD also called for improved infrastructure, adequate medical equipment, better working conditions, and the prompt payment of salaries and entitlements owed to house officers. The association noted that while electronic clocking systems are not opposed, they should be implemented properly to support accurate data management rather than penalise medical personnel.

Resolving these disputes, the NARD stated, would enhance doctor welfare, reduce burnout, and improve healthcare quality for Nigerians. The association elected new national officers, with Dr Ogar becoming president, and urged the new leadership to pursue resolution of the issues and maintain engagement with the government for improved conditions of service for resident doctors.
