Remains of dozens of suspected kidnap victims found in Nigerian forests

Investigators in Nigeria have uncovered the remains of at least 28 individuals believed to be kidnapping victims in remote forests. The skeletal remains were discovered in the Umuaku and Nneato forests of Abia state, following a security operation conducted by police. Police spokeswoman Maureen Chinaka revealed that the suspects abandoned the camps upon the arrival of law enforcement.

The area has seen a rise in criminal activity, with kidnappers frequently targeting motorists, travelers, and residents for ransom. Abia State Police Command launched the raids based on intelligence reports of suspicious criminal activity in the forests. The remains are currently under forensic examination to confirm their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Police have intensified surveillance in the region to apprehend the fleeing suspects. Abia's police commissioner, Wilfred Afolabi, stated that the operation is part of a broader campaign to dismantle criminal hideouts in the state. Authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious activity as efforts continue to identify the victims and connect their remains to unresolved kidnapping cases in the region.

Previously, decomposing bodies linked to kidnapping activities were found during security raids in Umunneochi. Additionally, over 80 individuals, primarily women, were abducted in separate mass kidnappings in northern Nigeria over the weekend, while nearly 50 farmers were abducted by gunmen in Niger State on Sunday. Elsewhere in Zamfara state, approximately 40 women were also kidnapped on Sunday.

Kidnappings for ransom have become a significant source of income for various criminal organizations, including bandits and militant Islamists, in northern Nigeria.
