Ramaphosa rejects claims that ANC is ‘dead’ in KZN despite 2024 election setback

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa dismissed claims that the party is "dead" in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) despite its poor performance in the 2024 elections. Speaking in eThekwini, Ramaphosa stated that the ANC is gaining momentum and progressing in rebuilding the party after its disappointing election results. He acknowledged the decline in the party's support in KZN, which dropped from 54% in the previous election cycle to around 16% in the 2024 elections, as some had suggested the ANC was "dead" in the province.

However, Ramaphosa firmly rejected this view, emphasizing that the ANC is deeply rooted in KZN and its current campaign demonstrates the party's vitality and rebuilding efforts. He reported that people are returning to the ANC from other political parties, which he sees as part of the party's renewal. The ANC aims to return to a position where it can govern again, rather than relying on other parties for power.

The rebuilding process includes strengthening branches and improving engagement with communities. However, some experts have questioned the evidence behind Ramaphosa's assertion of the ANC's momentum.
