Qatar farms use non-genetically modified seeds, avoid harmful chemicals: Expert

Doha, Qatar - Agriculture in Qatar operates under strict regulations, with farms utilizing non-genetically modified seeds and eschewing potentially harmful chemicals, according to agricultural expert Abdulrahman Al-Obaidan. In an interview on Al Rayyan TV, Al-Obaidan explained that agricultural oversight oversees the seeds and inputs used by local farms, with controls in place against prohibited substances designed to speed up production.

The expert emphasized that Qatar's farming practices do not involve health-harming chemicals, and instead employ biological pest control methods. This approach contributes to the reputation of locally produced food as safe and fresh, despite higher costs for farmers working within Qatar's arid climate. Al-Obaidan noted that freshly harvested domestic vegetables often reach consumers within a day or two, compared to imported produce that may spend extended periods in transit.

While consumers may lack detailed information about the growth process, seed sources, or water usage, the expert claimed that the advantages of locally grown produce outweigh these inconveniences. Qatar's agricultural sector has gained ground in both quality and availability, matching or surpassing some imported products. This progress is part of a broader strategy to bolster food security, supported by modern technologies and an emphasis on local production, particularly in light of Qatar's challenging environmental conditions.
