PTA Sets New Testing Standards for 5G Devices and Base Stations

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has established new testing and compliance standards for 5G devices and base stations through the Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations, 2024. These standards mandate that 5G New Radio devices undergo testing for radio-frequency transmission and reception, as well as verification of compliance with protocol requirements.

This framework aims to ensure that all equipment utilized in Pakistan's telecommunications networks adheres to the necessary technical specifications prior to deployment. The regulations incorporate international standards for 5G user equipment, addressing aspects such as radio performance, spectrum access, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Additionally, the framework establishes distinct radio-conformance testing protocols for 5G New Radio base stations. The regulations also extend to previous generations of mobile technology, encompassing 2G, 3G, and 4G devices and network equipment. Technology-specific standards have been laid out for GSM, UMTS, LTE, and CDMA2000 mobile devices and base stations.

Compliance obligations apply to PTA licensees, manufacturers, and importers of telecommunication equipment. To receive a Certificate of Compliance, relevant test reports from accredited laboratories must be submitted upon application to the PTA.
