Psychologists want in on early intervention program

Psychologists are urging their inclusion in the upcoming Thriving Kids program, which begins in October, to prevent children with developmental delays from falling through the cracks. The Australian Psychological Society and the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc. have issued a joint statement warning that without psychologists' expertise, families could miss out on crucial support.

The psychologists' association emphasizes that psychologists possess advanced training in child development, psychological assessment, and evidence-based interventions, making them vital for effectively addressing children's developmental, behavioral, emotional, and family needs. The peak bodies recommend ensuring psychologists' continued access outside the Thriving Kids program, preventing GPs from "gatekeeping" assessments and referrals, and integrating collaboration between families, educators, and everyday settings into the program's design.

They also call for expanding annual subsidised psychology sessions and improved subsidies for children requiring more intensive or sustained care. While not the sole means of support, psychologists can provide a referral pathway for children needing early intervention.
