Peter Mbae admits moles are in opposition, questions constant attacks on Gachagua

Nairobi, Kenya - The leader of the Jubilee Party, Fred Matiang’i, has affirmed his commitment to the opposition even if he does not win the presidential nomination, as rival leaders work to unite their forces ahead of the 2027 General Election. Matiang’i urged opposition leaders to put party interests above personal ambitions, stating that disagreements over the top role should not hamper their efforts to unite.

In a church service in Narok County, he emphasized that the opposition's success depends on maintaining unity as they choose a flagbearer. Matiang’i warned that another five-year term for the current administration could have severe consequences for the nation, urging leaders to concentrate on the larger political goal rather than personal desires.

Just a day earlier, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for Citizens Party had cautioned that selecting a joint opposition candidate might lead to one of the main figures withdrawing from the coalition. Drawing parallels to the aftermath of the 2002 General Election, Gachagua recalled how opposition leaders united behind Mwai Kibaki, while Simeon Nyachae chose to go alone.

Gachagua anticipated a similar outcome as leaders negotiate for a single presidential candidate in the upcoming election, predicting that one individual would leave the opposition coalition. Gachagua, however, vowed to stay within the coalition even if he does not secure the presidential role himself. The differing perspectives underscore the significant challenge the opposition faces in reaching agreement on a candidate for the 2027 election, with multiple leaders vying for positions ahead of the contest.
