Passengers decry non-uniform charges after 8% transport fare increase

Discontent has surfaced at several transport hubs after passengers reported that drivers are charging fares exceeding the authorized 8% hike. The fare increase came into effect last Saturday after several discussions between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport. Drivers claimed the adjustment was unavoidable due to escalating fuel prices, spare parts, and other operational expenses that have significantly impacted their enterprises.

Yet, numerous passengers in Accra have asserted that fares are not consistent, with certain drivers allegedly levying charges surpassing the approved rate. In a conversation with JoyNews, a passenger stated, "Yesterday I was charged GH¢10 to reach Dome, yet returning a different driver demanded GH¢8. Therefore, the fares are not standardized."

Another passenger en route from Accra to Nkawkaw also lodged a complaint. "The fare was GH¢50, but now we are informed it has risen to GH¢55. This is excessive and it is causing confusion between us and the drivers. Consequently, the government should intervene." "I believe the fare is somewhat steep because the distance from Accra to Nkawkaw is not particularly lengthy," a further passenger remarked.

These grievances emerge as transport operators concede observations of several drivers charging fares beyond the authorized 8%. The operators assert that some drivers had already raised their fares prior to the official 8% adjustment being announced, and initiatives are being undertaken to align such charges with the approved rates.
