Over 560,000 visitors flock to Busan to see canal-trapped shark Bukang-i

Busan, a bustling southeastern city in South Korea, found itself under the spotlight recently as over 560,000 visitors flocked to a waterfront park to witness a unique sight: a 3.5-meter shark trapped in a nearby canal. The aquatic creature, dubbed Bukang-i after its North Port origin, initially drew public attention on September 18. Since then, the number of tourists has skyrocketed, with an astonishing 568,800 people viewing the unusual spectacle since September 19.

Public interest peaked during the Chuseok holiday, also known as Korean Thanksgiving. During this festive period, the park saw a staggering 483,000 visitors in just four days, a remarkable rise from its usual daily average of around 2,000 visitors. The numbers surged dramatically, with 101,000 visitors on Thursday, 136,000 on Friday, 140,000 on Saturday, and 106,000 on Sunday.

Initially, local maritime police and authorities attempted to remove the shark from the canal. However, the large marine animal proved to be tenacious, refusing to leave its confined space. Consequently, operations were halted as officials realized the futility of their efforts. Bukang-i remained a constant presence in the canal, capturing the imagination of the public and transforming the usual waterfront area into a popular tourist destination.
